Glasses and Contact Lens Technology
Wave Front/Free Form Progressives
The quality of a digital camera depends on the number of pixels it is capable of producing. The same is true for the clarity of a lens. These technologies allow lenses to be engineered with many times more precision resulting in lenses that offer increased clarity at all distances. To learn what these lenses can do for you visit our optical gallery.
Bifocal Contact Lenses
The ability to focus from far away objects to objects that are close is slowly lost as we age. Once we have reached our early 40’s we have lost enough of this focusing ability to notice. This usually means the need for bifocals or reading glasses. Today, with advances in contact lens technology; the need for glasses can be greatly reduced if not eliminated. There are many different designs that correct focusing difficulty. The process of finding the one that is right for some can be a process. Our doctors are experienced in these technologies and are eager to find the contact lens that is right for you.
Cataract Break Throughs
Toric Intra-Ocular Lens Implants
The new breakthrough in cataract surgery. Now there's a revolutionary new way to reduce the prescription power and thickness of glasses after cataract surgery. The ACRYSOF® Toric lens corrects cataracts and astigmatism simultaneously.
Our surgeon is currently using the ACRYSOF® Toric intraocular lens (IOL), it has been uniquely designed to reduce the astigmatism power. Some patients may still need glasses for certain tasks but the overall need for them will be reduced. As with all things this technology works better for some patients than others. Here at the Eye Center of NW Ohio we will not suggest this technology unless it is right for you. Contact us to see if this technology is right for you.

The new breakthrough in cataract surgery. Now there's a revolutionary new way to reduce you’re your need for glasses after cataract surgery. Our surgeon is currently using the AcrySof® ReSTOR® intraocular lens (IOL), it has been uniquely designed to improve vision at all distances – up close, far away and everything in-between reducing the need for glasses for qualifying patients. Some patients may still need glasses for certain tasks but the overall need for them will be reduced. As with all things this technology works better for some patients than others. Macular Degeneration Treatments
Anti-VEGF Therapy
Wet Macular Degeneration is caused from distressed cells giving off a protein called VEGF. This causes new blood vessel formation in the attempt to bring more oxegen to these cells. Unfortunately these new blood vessels are fragile and leak fluid and blood which results in significant damage to these cells. Researchers have developed anti-VEGF therapy which are drugs that can be administered once these new blood vessels have been identified to reverse this process greatly reducing the amount of vision loss that can occur. 90% of severe vision loss from Macular Degeneration is caused by the wet form of the disease. Symptoms of this include wavy appearance of straight lines and a blurry or black spot in the central vision. Since early detection is critical to save vision a screening device has been created called an

(Age Related Eye Disease Study) AREDS II
Results from the AREDS I showed that high levels of antioxidants and zinc significantly reduce the risk of advanced Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and its associated vision loss by 25%. AREDS II is redoing the study to determine the effects of adding lutein/zeaxathine found in green leafy vegetables and omega III fatty acids to see if you can further reduce this risk. It will also determine if reducing the amount of zinc and eliminating betacarotene (Vitamin A) has any affect. Some smaller studies speculate that these changes could reduce the risk by up to 40%. To purchase your AREDS formula vitamins visit our online store or stop into our office.
Glaucoma Technology
Nerve Fiber Analysis
Researchers discovered that up to 50% of retinal ganglion cells (the cells that make up the nerve fiber layer) are lost prior to the development of side vision defects in glaucoma. Nerve Fiber Analysis shows changes in the Optic Nerve Fibers up to 4 years before any other tests allowing treatment for glaucoma to be started immediately. The HRT II system is the most reliable, reproducible and accurate method of monitoring changes in the optic nerve and retinal nerve fiber layer, which is imperative for diagnosis and management of early glaucoma. This is why the Eye Center of NW Ohio uses this technology in our office. To learn more download this brochure on the HRT II.
Cosmetics
Latisse
Latisse is the only FDA approved treatment to increase eyelash volume. It was first used as a glaucoma medication that had an interesting side effect, increased eyelash volume. It was remarketed and an applicator was created to localize the effect to the eyelashes. The results can be substantial.
